4 Steps to Finding the Perfect Pair of Jeans

By Allison Onyett, Aug 21

For some of us, shopping for the perfect pair of jeans is like finding the perfect bathing suit—it’s something you need to put a bit of time and effort into, and some days, can feel near impossible.

To get some expert advice on this daunting task, I turned to Styleista, the CORE’s personal stylist team, to provide me with some of tips and tricks on finding the perfect pair of jeans.

Essentially, there are four basic components you need to think about when shopping for that perfect pair of jeans; fit, wash, pockets and rise, and to no surprise, fit is the most important.

Step 1: Fit

Before heading out on your jean-finding mission, ensure that you are aware of your body type and the denim style that fits and flatters you in the best way. If you’re not sure, spend a few minutes in front of the mirror and see which body type describes your own.

Here’s a guide to finding your fit based on your body type from Styleista:

Apple: Apple-shaped ladies need their denim to provide a little more “give” in the waistline, because they tend to carry their weight around the middle. Choose a fit that has a straight leg so that it shows off your assets, but without making you look middle-heavy.

Petite: Petite girls can go for almost any cut, but it’s a good idea to try a pair of jeans that lengthens your legs. A long, super skinny cut will show off your tiny figure and curves, while a pair of high-waisted trousers will create the illusion of height and length.

Curvy: Show off your curves by picking a pair that hugs your assets and flatters not-so-favorite features. A lot of denim brands have fits that are marked “curvy,” which just means that the jeans are constructed specifically for curvier figures

Pear: A pear shaped body type tends to carry weight in the hips, rear, and legs–the lower half. A mid-rise, balanced style will flatter your shape because it will elongate your legs.

Step 2: The Wash

Once you’ve chosen a fit that best suits your body type, pay attention to the wash and fabric.

For catch-all jeans that’ll transition from day to evening, Styleista is a fan of dark denim - “it’s perfect for all seasons and is considered the ‘dress denim’ which can be worn out for dinner or to the office.”

Medium-wash denim is ideal for a more casual look, and light denim is perfect for those summer months.

Most importantly however, avoid overly stitched denim.

Step 3Pockets

As you're standing in the change room, take a look at the rear pocket placement. To avoid the “mum bum” or “saggy” look Styleista recommends that the pockets be centered in the seat of the pants.

Step 4: The Rise

Lastly, check out the rise of the jeans. Although a high-rise is trendy now, it doesn't work for everyone. Someone who is very tall and slender or has a petite body-type is likely to wear it best. If this is you, try on these ultra-retro GUESS 1981 High-Rise jeans.

Styleista considers the mid-rise a safe bet for all body types. This style also helps avoid the ‘muffin top’ (bonus!). These JBrand Maria Vanity over-dyed black jeans are a great example. Find them at Aritzia.

For a low-rise jean, the ‘boyfriend’ fit is my go-to style. The loose laid-back look is meant to sit on the hips, and is ideal for a casual Saturday afternoon. Try the Gap 1969 Destroyed Sexy Boyfriend Jeans.

Lastly, when you’re shopping for jeans, be sure to try on multiple styles, fits, washes and brands. It’s worth your time (and money) to ensure you feel good and look good in your denim purchase.
