Q & A with Mark Hill, Regional Director of Harry Rosen Calgary

By Caroline Fyvie , Jul 11

In celebration of summer style, we sat down with fashion consultant Mark Hill of the CORE’s Harry Rosen to discuss current and upcoming trends along with some men’s fashion must-haves.

Mark Hill has years of experience working for Harry Rosen, a menswear store that specializes in all men’s fashion, from suits to sneakers.

CORE Shopping: What are some current men’s fashion trends for this summer?

Mark Hill: “For this Summer I think the soft jacket is prevalent. There are certain things about menswear that are never going to change. Soft jackets have really made a big push into the mainstream. When I say soft jacket, it looks like a sports jacket but it has no construction in the interior. There are no inner findings, no chest pieces, and no shoulder pads. It’s something that looks very much at home with a hoodie as it does with a collared sports shirt, jeans, and even some of the trendier joggers.”

CS: Are there any trends that are not as popular from the past year?

MH: “It’s funny, menswear is so homogenous. There’s not a lot that changes dramatically. I would say from last season or even last year, there haven’t been many major changes. Things are very slow to change unlike womenswear, which can be a little more revolutionary. Menswear is very evolutionary and so it takes longer for things to sink in.”

CS: What do you think we will be seeing more of in 2017?

MH: “For fall, I can tell you that the soft jacket trend continues for sure - but I think you’ll see it in real heritage yards. You’ll see more of that classic tweeds, and herringbones, as well as the heavier fabrications, which you know gives jeans a real sophistication. You can put on that old, almost collegiate style jacket; however these are very unstructured so they feel like you’re wearing a knit or even a cardigan.”

“The sneaker as a dress shoe is continuing to be a trend. Although it’s dressy leather on a rubber sole, if you look at it closely it looks like a runner. The upper portion has elements of dress shoe which is what creates this sort of hybrid dress shoe. These are dressier looking sneakers in general, I don’t mean your cross trainers or shoes that are designed for athletics.”

“Lastly, Turtlenecks. We’re banking that turtlenecks are going to be big again, part of that heritage fabric. Turtlenecks pair really well with those (soft) jackets so I think we’ll them return in the coming season.”

CS: What’s something that every man should own as a fashion staple?

MH: “A soft jacket of sorts is something that probably a lot of men are missing.”

“I think we will see the down jacket, and new variations of these puffy coats, however lighter weights and lighter piles - so they’re not quite as puffy looking”

CS: What’s worth investing in for the long term?

MH: “I think for men a good pair of shoes is always worth investing in. Certainly there are a lot of trends that take place, however, when you purchase a solid pair of dress shoes you’ll get every dollar you paid for them. When it is well made and it is good leather, that is more often than not the biggest difference between a $100 shoe and a $1,000 shoe. This is because we forget to ask about the product of raw material it is made out of.  We most often assume, ‘Oh its leather,’ - however, leather comes in many different grades, similar to wool and cashmere.

“A good quality pair of shoes will last if given the love and attention that they deserve.”

CS: Have you noticed any different trends in Calgary lately?

MH: “I find men are being open to trying new things. Pocket squares are an example as we are selling way more of them than we have.”

“The little details make a difference. A pocket square, the right socks, a good pair of shoes, the fact that your belt matches; it’s those details that make the difference. I think men are starting to appreciate and understand this. They are beginning to, pardon the pun, ‘buy into it’.”
